Prices And Wages Rising In Britain
Received Monday, 7 p.m. LONDON, August 9. Both prices and wages are continuing to rise in Britain, aFcording to the latest informatkm issued by the Ministrv of Ijabour. In the first six months of this year over 750,00(1 people "sliared in the addition of nearly' £1,000, 000 vveekly to ±'1114 time wages. The wages index rose from 104 per •cent. to 106 per cent. in the period and the prices index from 104 per cent. to 1 10 per £.ent. Food was responsible for the biggest pric.e rise, followed by fuel, liglit, drink and tobacco. In the past year the price of food has risen by 13 per cent., fuel and liglit by 10.4 per cent., drink and tobacco by10.8 per cent., the latter ligure being due to the Budget. There were 1053 recorded strikes involving 314,200 people and causing a total loss of 1,586,000 working days in the first six months. of this year. This eompares with 974 strikes involving 342,600 'people and causing a lnss of 1,318,000 working days in the sanie period last year.
