Proof of Age
An unusual means oi arnvmg ai the age of a house was accepted at a recent sitting of the, West Goast Land Saies Committee. The house !in question was roofed with zinc shingles, a'nd the valuer informed the committee that the house was 40 years old. In support of his contentipn, he mentioned that he had noticed-that the shingles were off- : cuts from caskets made to convey [to China the remains of Chinese exhumed from- West Coast cemeteries just after the present century opened. An old residput,.yprsed in the eariy customs of the Chin.se, mentioned that in accordance with the Chinese desire to rest finally in 'the soilvof their uative land, it had 'been arranged that those buried on the West Coast and in other parts Of New Zealand should be exhumed and sent to China.
