INVERCARGILL, August 9. Otago defeated Southland 17 to 3 in a retnrn match. on Saturday before a erowd of abqut 15,000. Overhead conditions were ideal but. the ground was heavy. The superior; skill and speed ot the Otago baeks dgain proved a deeisive factor but forward play on both sides was first class. Added keenness was given by the fact that the mateh was an All Blaclc trial. Tries for Otago were scored by Botting, Hamilton, Meates (2) and Haig, the last-named converting his own try. L. F. Ward kieked a penalty goal for^Southland.
