LONDON, July 27. New Zealand was third prineipal supplier to the United Kingdom of preserved milk in 1947 and second prineipal suppiier of casein. Her exports of botli cominodities to the United Kingdom varied considerably during the period 1937/47 states " Dairy, Produce, " published by the Conmionwealtk Economic Committee. Total output of preserved milk in the prineipal producing countries of the world greatly increased during tlie period, and in 1946 exeeeded the 193/ level by more than 60 per'ceirt. Outputin the Uniteil Wtates, by far the iargest producing country, practically doubied. It fell by 40 per eeht. in -the United Kingdom, and by:,S5 per cent. in the Netlierlands, vvhere an upwai'd trcnd began in 1947.. ; In 193-7 New Zealand exports of preserved njilk to the United -Kingdom were 168,000 cwt. There. were fluctuations . during the war, • and ih 1945 the ligure fell to 59,000 cwt. It recovered to 75,000 cwt. in 1946 and in 1947 .jumped to 266,000 cwt. This placed New Zealand second in that year to (Janaha (331,000 cwt.), with the United States ranking first with 1,468,000 cwt. Austraiia sent 119,000 cwt., Eire 101,000 cwt., the Netherlands 87,000 cw.t., and Denmark 57.000 cwt.

In 1946 (the figur.es for 1947 are not yet available), the United Kingdom reniained the biggest world importes of preserved milk, foliovved by .Poiand, Italy and France in that order. ' . ; The review notes that there has -been a consideraiile change in the distrioution of casein exports caused by the disappearance from the market of Germauy, Japau and Italy, which in 1938 took 47 per cent. of the exports of prineipal exporting countries. substantial quantities froiu the Argentine. About one-third of the exports ot New Zealand, Argentine and France were sent to the United Kiugdom, whicli received about 30 per cent. of world exports, or 166,300 cwt. In 1947 the United Kingdom 's imports of casein had risen to 25S,0U0 cwt., the prineipal suppiier being Argontine (155,300 cwt.) with New Zealand ranking second (46,000 cwt.), Denmark third (23,500 cwt ) and other Comnionwealtli- countries combined (19,400 cwt.). A feature of the world casein trade is the emergence of the United States as an importer. In 1937 she ranked fourth taking 46,500 cwt,, but in 1946 she was the world 's biggest importer of this product, receiviug 401,60*0 cwt. (the ligure for 1947 is not yet available.)
