Shannon School Matters
The * monthly meeting of the Shannon;- School -;,Committee was teldf ,a;t jthef^(|^d# this week, with Mf.'F. J. Luciifeky (acting chairman) presiding over Messrs. S. Free, L. J. Bowler (secretary) , F. E. Bradey, E. H, Barber, R. E. Vinsen and Mrs. W. iEaston. Apologies for absence ■ were' rCceived from Mrs! C. Sterh and Mr. A". E. Jeffrey.' Mr. F. O. Burtt, the -headmaster,. was also present. . • - j *; •' • It ; was pointe'd .out that Mrs". Connolly, a late . .cleaner of the school, was ill iil hospital and it was resolved that the secretary write to her on behalf of the committee, Wishing her a speedy recovery. It was decided t'o plough the vacant section next to the headmaster's resi'dence and plant a crop of . potatobs:,, .; Arrdngements were put in hand' for repairing one of the boundary fences. • The visiting committeemen for the month of August will be Messrs. F. J. Lucinsky and F. E. Bradey. The headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, presented his report for the month of July, which was as follows: — "The school roll for the month stood at 145 . boys . and 138 girls. The attendance ■ during the month .averaged 130 boys and 126 girls. There have been 15 admissions and eight withdrawais. The 'district n,urse, ^Sister MacDonald, carried out her routine. Inspection and the school was- inspected by Mr. G. H. Stubbs, senior inspector, and Mr. H. F. McClune, while the dental clinic wasi inspected. by Mrs. Smethurst, dental ' inspector. "Messrs. Silverwood and Keenan, pa-trol "officers of " the Wellington Automobile Association, showed safety first' films to the pupils, addressed the school an'd carried out an inspection of bicycles. Satisfaction was expressed by these gentlemen at the high percentage of bicycles that qualified for warrants of fitness, and with the enthusiasm and efficiency of the school patrols. . School children have been forbidden to use the railway yards as a right-of-way. Those children who live west of the railway are met by road wardens 15 minutes before the opening of morning.and afternoon classes, and are cbnclucted'' across the railway ■lines' at.jljhe crossing and the main road. ' Senior pupils are per'mitted to-> cro^s on, their own. Mr. B. Register,' of .the. Health' Department, palmerston North, ' showed several educational film.s to the piipils and the school owes thanks to Mrs. E. L. Hyde for making the Druids' Hall available for this purpose, and for the . Automobile Association films.' "At least 70 pupils continue to take cocoa daily. This has been made possible by the generous donation of milk by members of the school committee. The pupils .are thus no longer exposed to all weathers, and are able to benefit from full time classes in manual training. The Parents' and Teachers' Association was addressed by Miss L. Steven, education nurse for dental health, and appropriate films were shown by Mr. *B. Register, of the Health Department. The next meeting will be held on Monday evening, August 9, at 8 p.m., when the guest speaker will be Mr. E. J. Stanley, manager of the Boys' Training Centre, Levin. The regular weekly football and basketball matches against other schools have now been completed, eight matches beirig played."
