QUARANTINING OF CONTACTS
WELLINGTON, August 3. New regulations for infectious diseases, which came into force last Aprii provided for the quarantining of adults where this was thouglit necessary by a local medical officer of health, -stated the Wellington District Health Officer (Dr. Hubert Srnith), today. He was commenting on the expressed concern that adults in contact with positive cases of infantile paralysis and children from schools where infeetion appeared, might evade any quarantine restrictions.Dr. Smitli said the quarantining of normal adult contacts was left in the hands of the medical officer hiniself, but specific arrangements for quarantining a pupil and a teacher were set down and speciai arrangements existed where people were handling food, including milk. "Our generak method of handling • this question is not to quarantine wageearner unless the indications are that he is likelv to spread the infeetion," Dr. Smith said. ' ' Iiistructions are given that he should avoid coutact with others as much as possib!e; and if eonvenient work on his own. ' '
