Prices For Fat Wethers At Levin Shatter All Records
All records were shattered in'the sheep section at the Levin sale yesterday when a pen of wethers made an all time high price of 77s 7d. A truqk of wethers brought 68s lOd, while riher trucks realised 66& 4d and 66s lOd. s ' •' .
Mediuni wethers sold from 5Ss 4d ;o 59s lOd, while ' light . wethefS :vere bought at 55s 4d. Ewes came orward in very short supply, a p^n ;f young sorts . realising 50s 10d,: /hiie good medium ewes made from '.6s 4d to 47s ld.. Black faced t,wo-i ooths sold from 43s lOd to 49s 10d.' Ioggets sold in proportion to the heep, good quality woolly sorts ihanging hands at prices up to 55s, vhile medium sorts returned 40s or )etter. Light and unfinished hog-j -'ej;s were snatched up. by grazievs at. prices rahging from 30s to 40s. In the store sheep section,' }heviot-cross two ahd four-tooth vethers in fair condition brought 3s 6d, while forward condition ?,omney wethers made 45s 6d. Five-rear-old ewes, r.w.S.D. rams, with ?ood mouths but low condition, topped 36s 3d, while small one-year wes with no mouths at all made 25s. A representative yarding of fat cattle was -suhmitted to butchers, extra prime medium oxen selling from £22 2s 6d to £24 12s 6d. light Jersey oxen- changed. hands at ffom £11 15s 6d to £15 12s 6d. Good quality P.A. runners mad'e from £11 7s to £13 2s 6d, and ex-daify heifers and steers from £7 10s to £10 12s 6d. The vealer yarding was snialler than usual, .all the animals penned being . young light calves which changed hands at from £1 17s 6d to £3 17s 6'd. There was a good yarding of dairies, which met with keen demand for both heifers and cows close to profit, later calVers not being soughL Values fof cow^s close to profit were up to £18 10s, while heifers close to proHt sold at from £13 10s to £16 10s. Later calving • cows went at from £8 to £10 10s. The pig yarding was again small ahd values for well grown porkers wefe again high, these making up to £6. Medium porkers changed r hands at from £5 4s to £5 17s, while , lighter sorts sold from £4 3s. ChopI pers realised from £5 5s to £7 7s 6d. A fair yarding of store pigs met with extra keen competition, slips making from £2 3s to £2 10s. The feature of the store pig yarding was a sow and litter of nine, which .changed hands at £20, other sows to farrow making from £4 12s to £8.
