Zapotek Fails in Gailant Attempt
Covyright)
Received Tuesday, 10.45 a.m, LONDON, August .2 The Olympic Games resumed todhy aftei* the wjeekend in cooler weather. Rank hbliday crowds flocked tb Wembley ^tadium and pool, but rain early this afternoon somewhat Spbiled the field events. The brilliant Czech runner, Emil Zapotek who amazed the crowd by his sensational victory in the 10,000 metres on Friday, failed gallantly in an attempt to do what even the great Nurmi could not accomplish — win the 10,000 -and 5,000 metre races in one Olympiad. Haanes Kilchmainen did it in 1912, but no other runner has since accomplished it. Zapotek smashed the Olympic f-eeord of 14 mins. 22.2 secs." for the race. It was a stirring race and the crowd again roared themselves hoarse, their support undoubtedly going to Zapotek. Alto'gether tljree Olympic records were broken today in the five events decided. Harris Undergoes Operation . The New Zealander, Douglas Harris, who suffered three spike wounds in his left heel during the heats of the 800 metre event on Friday, underwent an operation today iii St. Mary's ' Hospital, where surgeons • stitched the achilles tendon.
