Personai ; Mr.- O. H. Tippler, Okuku Road, left on Sunday afternoon for a few days' holiday in Auckland. Heavy Frosts "Heavy frosts- in the district have given early risers an unpleasant time. the'se last two mornings, Yesterday morning. saw "one of the heaviest. frosts' this winter. This morning's :was not as heavy in the township, but was quite sharp in.the Moutoa', ah^i Makerua' areas. Badminton Competitions Further progress is reported in the Shannon Badminton Club's competitions. In recent matches N. Retter defeated L. Burling and Miss M. Fuller defeated Miss A. Pederson. Players wlio have not yet completed their first round matches are requested by the committee to do so as soon as possible. Golf -Honours Change Hands Ideal weather conditions prevailed at Buckley over the weekend, when many golfers were on the links. In the "top dogs" competi-v tion the holders, Messrs. C. and W. Stern, were defeated by Messrs. K. Thomson and D. Pureell, with the score of .two up. In the combined stcoke competition Messrs, W. Stern and W. C.-Higgie were the winners. A "Neaf Miss" . Foxton had a "near miss" from -a serious flre last Tuesday when the town almost lost its fire station. Someone, however, noticed smouldering bedding in oue of the bedrooms just in time, A serious outbreak of fire was also narrowly averted at Tokomaru yesterday, when the roof of a wash-house, which was joined to the house, caught fire. The help of a passing motorist was enlisted and two or thre well pl'aced buckets of water soon had the outbreak under control. The sole occupant of thedwelling was an elderly lady, who was doing the washing.
