During the past few months slow but sure progress has beeh made in the primary stages of making the- Shannon and 'district. War Memorial Hall.a facti . ; It is generally known that an, efforfc was made some time ago to raise part of the cost with voluntary ' contributions.. The total sum raised from that..appeal was almost £400. Since that time there have been many difficulties in the path of those who are working to ma'ke a memorial to the- district's war heroes possible. , Firstly, there was a diff erence of opinion as to whether or not a compromise could be made with the La'dies' Rest Room Committee with a view to combining the latter building in the memorial hall. This, however, was not possible and the memorial committee decided t'o continue' alone. Since that time there have been a number of public meetings and by permission of the public the committee has been enlarged an'd empowered to proceed further. The preliminary arrangements are now almost eompleted and the plans and details of the proposed buil'ding are ready to place before the Intemal Affairs Department for approval and the granting of a subsidy. The public will know all the details when they are presented by the committee at a public meeting in a few weeks' time, Deputation Meets Council On Tuesday evening the. The plan had been designed so that the supper room encroached on the property at the rear of the Council Chambers, an'd the council was asked to agree to this. It.-was also pointed out that the plan had been adopted by the conmiittee and the approval of the council was asked for. The deputation also aske'd on what- teTms. the council would accept paynient-' for ' the section which the Memorial Hall Committee had been giv.en an option to pur chase. The council resolved, on the motion of Cr. H. L. Norris, s.econded by Cr. C. G. . Wisliart, that the plan submitted by . . the War Memorial Committee be provisionally approved. Cr. H. Aitchison move'd, and Cr. C. M. Cronquest seconded, that the request of the memorial committee for use of a portion of land at the rear of the Municipal Buildings to erect supper rooms as part of the proposed war memorial hall be approved.
