Local Junior Reps. Retain Gillespie Cup

HUI MAI BEAT WANDERERS , Although the day Was wet and the gro.und heavy, two grand games of footbail were seen .at the Levin Park Domain on Satqrday. . In the hrst, a 'decisive one in the sepior xhampionship, Hui Mai outplayed Wanderers to wm by the slen'der margin of 13 points to 11. These two teams turned on a sparkiing display, despite the conditions, and Hui Mai were the bet'er team pn the day. They capitalised almost' every opening which came their way, wherens Wanderprs were slow to use their apportunities. The other • game was a bright plash between the Horpwhenua an'd Bush junior representatives for the Giliespie Cup, -held by Horowhenua. With only a few minates of p ay remaining and the visitors leading 12 — 9, Horowhenua faced defeat. Then amidst wild excitement they turned a penalty to good advantage to draw even with Bush, thus retaining the cujL • The only other game played in the district was the senior fixture between Shannon and Otaki-Rahui, which the former- won by nine points to six. All third and fourth grade games were postponed because of the adverse weather. The Senior Competitions With only one series- of games to compiete the senior ehampionship, Hui Mai, Wanderers and Athletm each have 15 points, making a playoff almost inevitable. Athletic meet V/anderers in the final ser-ies and the winner of this game will then play off with Hui Mai, assuming that they can again beat Shannon as they have done in the first two rounds. If Shannon should carry the 'day, then the championship honours wili go to the winner of the Athletic-Wandere s game, in which past performances favour Wanderers. In the Nash Cup competition, which is deeided over the third and :final roun'd of the championship, Athletic have six points and Wanderers four. • If Wanderers beat Athletic in the -final game, a playoff will be necessary for this tr ophy.
