Shannon Borough Matters
The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon. Borough Council was held on ' Tuesday evenirig and; the Maybr (hfe D. A. Fitzgerald) presided over Crs. N. Clayton, V. ' J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, .R. S. Downes,. M. ' Crdnquest, L. G. Sayer, C.„ G. Wishart .and N. Aitchison, A communication was received from the Local Government Loans Board regarding the council's application for a water, supply loan for £1500., The proposal was referred back to the council for reconsideration.and revision, It was pointed out that ' the decision was prompted by technical advice', which indicate-d that the works pro-. posed, though necessary, should only be considered iri relation to a comprehensive scheme of improvement and extension of the reticulation in the built up area of the borough. The matter was referred to the works committee. ' The borough . foreman's report was read and received. Cr. Clayton, chairman of the reserves committee, reported that Mr. K. Mitchell had given a demonstration of pruning trees in the beautifying area, and his assistance was very helpful to the borough'- foreman. Mr. Mitchell hadv also donated trees and planted them in the a,rea. It was resdlved to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr. Mitchell fpr _his donation of trees and pr'unihg assistance. . . Cr. Bateman reported that an inspection had been made of the library and reading room with a view to having alteratioils carried out and the material required would be purchased. Cr. .Norjis stated that as soon as the alterations to the library were completed, a supply of new books would be purchased. Cr. Sayer, chairman of the works committee, reported that the Manawaru grader was working for one day, and after the spoil from the sides of the streets had been removed, the grader would return and do a further section of the borough. He suggested that a lorry be engaged to assist in carting the spoil. This was agreed to on the motion pf . Cr. Bateman, seconded by the Mayor, the matter of engaging the lof-ry being left in the hands of the town clefk. Cr.' Sayer also stated. it V appeared as if the grader had S improved fhe Old1 Foxton Road but the bridge required attention. The • attention of the council was drawn to the fact? that sheds recently purchased from the War Assets Realisation Board were being placed on property within the borough. The matter was; 'left: in the hands -of the building committee to ihvestigate and report back to the council. t It was resplved that the duties of the ranger be under the control of •,the chairman of the . works committee. • j Accounts amounting to £67 14s. 4d, which 'ineluded' £41 7s 2d for wages,were passed for.payment.
