Record Sheep Prices At Feilding Sale
Record prices for prime mutton wero roalised at yesterday's live stock : sale in Feilding when extra prime quality wethers sold at £3 12s ld, a figure never previously quoted in the local yard saies. This figure exceeded the best price obtained at the Stortford Lodge sale this week and was just on 11s better than last week's best price of 61s lOd. The general shortage of good mutton has produced a very stroug iuquiry, and the competition yesterday was spread over hoggets and ewes as well as the wethers. Extra prime wethers sold from 62s 4d to 72s ld, hoggets from 51s lOd to 53s lOd and ewes t'rom 50s 4d to 55s 4d. In the store shecp dopartnxent the tone was also strong for the good sheep, ewe hoggets sclling to 42s 8d and wether hoggets to 42s while a top line of very attractive 2-th e.wcs made 55s and a pen of 4-ths. sold at 52s. Consider^ble interest was displayed in the ofl'ering of dairy cattle and although many lines lacked condition, buycrs did not hesitate to bid up to securo stock. A sinall- oifering of station cattle sold readily with an iniproving tono manifest. The only quotable business in the fat cattle department was the sale of a prime A.A. hoifer at £10 7s 6d. Fat Sheep .Mutton values registcred a very pronounced risc when the offering of approximately 900 fat sheep came unduf the hammer. Local butchers had to compete against outsido operators for this limited oll'ering whicli ineluded many outstauding lines of prime mutton, The top line of wethers was, tradod at the record price of £3 12s ld while other extra prhne quality sorts sold from £3 2s 4d to £3 7s 4d. Extra prime hogget mutton made to £2 13s lOd and ewes to £2 .15s 4d. While there wero some excellent quality ewes oil'eriug too many pens were niore in line with store condition. The first pefi to come upder the hammer was a line of LOQ ;^glt bre4,%th „e5yes,. in excellent order -and skdwing'pTehty of bloom, on account of Mr. L. E. Port,., of Pohangina. They were tradcd at £2' 15s. Lator on a pen of 120 .4-th ewes/ also in top condition, sold at£2 12s. Top price for ewe hoggets was 42s 8d for a line of 426 f roiri the Apiti country while a small pen of excellent wether hoggets realised 42s. Fat Cattle Three trucks of Hereford and A.A. , bullocks from Pahiatua were ofi'ered in the fat cattle pens. ' These were weli grown and big-boneld cattle lackiug finish and failed to realise vendors' reserves, £18 10s being the best price offered and they were passed in. One prime A.A. heifer was traded at £19 7s 6d and a Jersey heifer sold at £10 7s Od and this comprised the saies made.
