Machiavelli, Richelieu, Thiers, Guizot, Disraeli, and Rosebery were eonsidered in turn and rejected ior failing to matcli their impoxtance m hoth fields. The same fate awaited Cicero — in spite of his ov.n estimate of himself. Julius Oaesar, Lord Altrincham decided, was the only eompar?ihle map. Even the conqueror of G-aul and Britain, he continued, wrote only ahout his own actions. Mr. Churchill — though he had done that too— could also claim two famous biographies.
