Foxton Wharf To Be Sold
Some time .ago the Foxton Harbour Board decided to dispose oi the Foxton wharf and goods shed ahd, ascertaining from the Marine Department that there was- nbth-' ing to stpp the board realising on such assets, tenders " were invited forthwith for the goods ' shed. Althopgh several were receive'd,.,the board did not aecept.any. . Now the (Wharf is up for sale. • -- : - ; , , • The wharf has been in possessioiii of the board, slncet 1917A Before the board controlled the wharf it" was owned by the Railways Department, which built-it earlier in the century. Once a busy pori, Foxton was the outlet for the produce from the large area of rich agricultural land surrounding it, while considerable quantities of inward merchandise passed through it. Road And rail transport killed its sea borne transport and for many years now it has not been used. On December 3, 1906, ten vessels were held up at the Foxton wliarf, hot because of labour ' trouble's but because a heavy gale made the bar unwoYkable. During the' spell of enforced idleness, _ competitions were held amongs't the shlps between ofiicers, engineers, etc. Vessels which were well-known-visitors to Foxton in the old days were the Himatangi, Queen of the South, Baden Powell, Utiki, Moa,, Gertie, Waverly, Charles Edward' and Kennedy.
