Young Farmers' Football Tournament
Horowhenua lost the Manhattan Cup to Manawatu in the anfiual seven-a-side rugby tournament, ^tJiged by the Wellington Council of the Young Farmers' Chibs and . held in Levin yesterday. The score was 16 — 0. Horowhenua was represented by a Levin team and Mana)watu by the Waituna West Club. In the first round Manawatu beat Gisborne 8—5, Wairarapa beat Southern Hawke's Bay 6—3 and Horowhenua beat Wanganui 10 — 3. In the second round Manawatu beat Wairarapa 11 — 0 and in the finals Manawatu beat Horowhenua 16—0. The 'teams were : — Manawatu: B. O. Meads (captain), B. PI. Clare, S. P. Shannon, J. O. Shannon, C. Jones, J. N. short and C. Cumming. . Horowhenua: G.* Hudson (captain) , R. Denton, T. Lancaster, S. Gimblett, J. Fanning, F. Catley and D. Campbell. Horowhenua took the initiative from the kick off and pressed home a series of hard attacks. Retaliating, however, Manawatu made some deep penetrations and were the first to score, B. Clare crossing under the posts from a ' rearguard movement. / J. Short converted, making, the score 5 — 0. Somev scrappy play about halfway followed. Lancaster put in a good run down the side line, but was t&ckled 10 yards .fronr the line. A penalty was awarded Horowhenua but the kick was missed by Lancaster. Manawatu's next try came from J. Short, but his kick failed to make the cross bar. Manawatu 8, Horowhenua 0. Following half-time B. Clare , 'scored for Manawatu. The kick . missed. The final try, secured b^ Clare, was converted by J. Short.
