Otaki Borough Council's Meeting
The July m.eeting of the Otaki Borough CoiinQil was held on Wednesday . night, there being present the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, andCrs. N, D. Anderson, J. Retter, Ilv W. Hakaraia, G. McKinley and E. T. Bartosh; 'Ajso the town clerk, Mr. A. Wilson, • * A-le'tter was received from the executive . offlcer of the New Zealand Standards- Institut'e, seeking information froixi the council in regard to the adoption of by-laws for the control and licensing of boarding houses and simiiar premises. The comipunication was received and left in the hands of the town clerk. A further letter from the instltute advised the council that its pr.der . for the stajidard code of builaing by-laws- had be.en lo'dged 1 with the Government printer, and that it would probably- be completed withhi the next two months. The. secretary of the Otaki Commerciai Association, Mr.. J. D. Avefy, wi'ote referring to the -exhibitions. of publicity posters of | Otaki. . He . said. that tne R,ailways | Department . had submittcd a | quotation' for one picture to be Ipcated at the Weliington Stationj aiid one at the Palmerston North stationi -He asked if ,the council would agree .to- the use of thd two paintings referred to, and tq shar- j ing ihe cost. Verbal negotiations had taken pface previously, said j the town clerk. The Railways ! Department's executive offlcers had stated that- no charge would oe i made, After further discussion, it i was decided to'write to the associa- ! tion, advising It in accordanCe with j tlie dlerk's report. Otaki Amusements, Ltd., acknowledged the council's communication in regard to the re-paintlng of the auditorium of the Civxc Theatre. However, it was pointed out that a great deal of tiling work was required to be carried out, and that there were certain badly needed vent.ilation improvements. It was decided to reply that quotations were being obtained for tiling and ventilatlon improvements, • An application fol* permission to hold. a football match on the Otaki Domain on a Sunday was received from tlie secretary of the Rahui Football Club,- Mr. A. G. Julius, and met with a mixed reception. Two councillors strongly objected to a move of this.nature, stating that the councii should not ahow Sunday -.games. !FUp application .was granted, there. being two dissenting Voices. ' . * An appeal for a donation toward the funds for the restoration of the Rangiatea Maori Church was received 'from the Rev. Paora Te'muera, who is the offlcial receiver for the Rangiatea Centennial and Restoration Committee. It was decideti to' make a^grant of £10 10s. A letter of . appreciation was received from " the Man.awatu Catchment Board. expressing pleasure at the council's agreement to collect the money promised in connection with the erosion on tne banks of the Otaki River, a shon distahce above the Railway Bridge. Approval was given to th,e hording of a combiiied church evangelistic. meeting in tlie Civic Tlieatre, Otaki. It was stated that tlie meeting would be conducted by Mr. John Hopkins, the B.B.C. Gospe' singer, and that no charge would be. made for admittance. The Manawatu branch of the I New Zealand Crlppled Children'! Society wrote advising that tne Mayor of Otaki had been elected by that branch as a vice-president. It was liopeti that the office would be accepted, as the branch supervised the .welfare of the crippled children in Otaki. Mr. Atmore accepted the office and the council made a tionation of £3 3s to the branch. " v . A recommendation from the works committee that a bulldozer should be used for the levclling off of tlie wliole width of the road fronting the Tasman Beach motor camp was a'dopted. ■ An application for a taxi-driver's . license by Mr. J. G. Guthrie, of Otakij was granted. A letter- was received from the Commissionel* of Transport, Mr. G. L. Laurensoh, ,-asking that a proposal to install a school pedestrian i jrossing from- the State School J entrance to the bus loading zone , should be placed. before the coun- , cil. It.was considcred desirable to , install a further pedestrian cross- j ing outside the Civic Theatre to ?nsure that patrons kept to a lefmed path aeross the road, conbinued .the letter. Mr.* Laurenson isked for the views of the council in these matters. It was pointe'd ■ mt that these proposals had originited from tlie..- council.
