WELLINGTON, July 15. • In a statement issiiecl last niglit by the New Zeaiaiicl Daihy Lro-. duets Marketing Commission announoing that an agreement had , been reached ;with the British Ministry of Food regarding a long term contract for the purchase and saie of New Zealand 's- exportable surplus of dairy produce, it was pointed out t'hat _ representatives of the Commission prooeedech to London some weeks agu for diseussions with the Ministry of Food •eoncerning this subject. These representatives were Messrs. W. Marshall, chair--man of the Commission, TI. A. Candy ■ and B,. C. Ashwin, mem- ' bers of the Commission, and Mr. G. M. Pottinger, general manager. . The agreement which had been reached between the Ministry of Food and Commission covered the saie of' the exportable surplus of butter and cheese from New Zealand 's production to July 31, 1955.. The price for the 1948-49 season will be 235s sterling per cwt. f.o.b. for butter, with a. corresponding price for cheese. Present prices are %05s sterling per cwt. for butter and H8s sterling per cwt. for cheese. Under the terms of the eantract the new. prices will be subject to annual review with a maximum variatiou up or do'wn of TI per cent. in any season 011 - the price L'or the preceding season. , The ^quantity to be made available to the Ministry of Food fronf ihe 1948-49 season 's production, is 97 per cent. of the exportable surplus calculated on a butterfat basis. The quantity is subject to i-eview aiinually and at any time if necessary, for the procurement of essential commodities from other eountries. It is clear, says the statement; that the agr.eeonent. which has ' ijeen reached gives a considerable ineasure of long term stability to the dairy industry in New Zealand, which should . encourage maximum ' production and give every incentive .for dairy farmers confidently to plan their operations towards this end.
