His yards at his wpolshed and for drafting had been constructed in the expectation 'that the gate and fence would reiuain. Their immediate removal would make the handling of his stock inipossible.' Instead Of removing the, fence, Mr. Hall undertook to fasten the gate open and only cl'ose it when necessary. Should the council sanction this action; he Would be willing to contribute £5 towards the metalling of theextension. A - letter was also received from Mr. J. A. IVhtchell, who enclosed £10 towards the cost of the work. He commented that if the road was, no. used as a holding paddock for stock it would be easy to maintain. He -had viewed Ihe portion of road referred to in company with pther counciilors, said Cr. Brown. General Matters A generous offer of a number of young kauri trees for planting in the public park at Manakau was made by Mr. E. H. Hoskins, of Allen Street, Otahuhu, in a letter to the council. He had planted two on his own property and considered that these beautiful trees would grow as far south as Manakau. As the only park known to the ' council in Manakau was Tatum Park, it was decided to see if Mr. Hoskins would be agreeable to have the trees planted in the gardens at the Manakau School. The matter was referred to Crs. Atkins and Taylor, with power to act. Mr. W, H. Roberts, of Buckley Road, Shannon, wrote asking if the 1 council could give some attention to the cleaning of the rOad drain in the yieinity of his property. The matter was left to the engineer to attend to. j Had the catchment board engi-i neers not been on hand wh'en the, Otaki River'was rising during the last heavy rains, the banks along the river near Mr. Chrystall's property would have broken' and flood water would have reached Otaki Railwuy and the .Township, This was revealed when the council was discussing a. letter from the Otaki Borough Council soliciting a donation towards the river work. It was decided to make a contribution qf £25. A letter from Mr. R. R. Sm'ith, of . Old Foxton Road, .Shannon, complained about the state of Old Foxton Road. The engineer was authorised to attend to the matter. A donation of £2 2s was granted the Horowhenua Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club on receipt of the club's annual report and balance sheet, . together with a circular thanMng the council for past assistance and asking if it could see its way clear to making a further doaattofi.
