The newspaper Neue l^eitung says: "The air oridge will cost the Soviet Union the Communist Party in Germany and the last remnancs of friendship in the world." Meanwhile, hundreds qf Allied planes dailv eontinue to rqar into Berlin with suppiies, and efforts are being made ro increase the air lift even more. Allied troops and .German labourers are construetihg a mile-long runway to increase the landing capacicy of Tempelhof Airfield in the United States Sector. Rubble and material- from Berlip's' bombed streecs is beipg used and tiqe work is continuing during the night under searchlights. United States Air Force planes, during the past 24 hours, have prougnt in the record Jift of 1249 tons pf food to Berlin. American piapes, since the begipning of the air lift on June 26, have brought in 11,096 tons of food, which, loaded in German rail waggons, would fi.ll d traih four and a-half miles long. Over 200 British planes have land'ed at Berlin with food and essential suppiies in the last 24 hours.
