Narrow Escape For Children In Home
BYDNEY, July 12. Wlien iire swept two dormitories of Ihe Deaf and Dumb Institute_. at Waratah, near Newcastlo, early today, the nuns had great difficulty in rescuing (il children- axxd 14 adult patiqnts. The children, of wliom 14 were babies and 30 between six and seven years old, did not reaiise tliey were in danger and, on being aroused, many of them clixnber back into bed again. The alarm was given bv the screams of a partlv-deaf cliild. The nuns tried to explaiji in sigxl language, but, though flames were breaking through" into tlie mai n dormitory from the linen room, the childreu did uot comprehend. "We just liundled them out, " said a nun, ' and even tlien some thought the business was a big joke. " The firemen were hampered later when the children tried to return to the buTIding for their belongings. Steelworkers and neighbours came to their assistance, but two dormitories were Imrnt out. During the outbreak a 50-year-old man employed at the institute collapsed and died.
