Friendly Football Aids Children's Appeal

The Unite'd Nations Appeal for Children will ben'efit by the sum of £5 16s, which was the collection at the gate at a friendly - football match on the local domain pver the weekend. The match was between teams from the Prince of Wales Hotel Sports an'd Social Club, Wellington, and the Albibn Hotel, Shamion, and was the first match for the T. S. Downes Challenge Cup. The home team proved the victors by nine points to nil in a very interesting game. Play was somewhat hampered by a greasy ball an'd a very wet ground, rain having fallen until late in the morning. There 'was a good gathering of spectators. From the opening whistle the home team forced play to the visitors' twenty-five and a passing rush led-\by Robinson and Callesen saw play go to the Wellington line. From a linequt a- speetacular kick returned the ball to half way. Shannon secured the ball and were back on the visitors' line. compelling them to force. From the drop-out a scrum went down on the half way line, from which Wellington secured the ball to send it into the home twenty-five. An infringement in a scrum following a knock-on gave the Wellington team a free kick which fell short. The visitors pressed to the home line and Shannon forced. Tritt sent the ball far upfield and it was knocked-on by a Wellington player. Play then centred around the middle of the field for some . time, an'd Chester sent the ball into the visitors' twenty-five, which was followed up smartly by the local pack and the Wellington team forced. From the drop-out the home team returned play to Wellington ground and Chester went aeross to score the first points of the game. Mortimer's attempt at goal failed. Wellington then began to force the play and soon after the kickoff Shannon forced. Rauhihi saved another bold attempt by the visitors, and half-time sounded soon after with the score. unchanged. Shannon pressed to the Wellington line following a bright passing rush. Following a series of scrums and lineouts, play centred in the home twenty-five for some time with the visitors having the better of the game.
