Assault Has Court Sequel

At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court in Otaki yesterday, Leonard Patrick Cootes was charged before Messrs. H. B. Edhouse and F. H. Critchley, J.P's., with assaulting 'Mary Kathleen Cootes, by striking her in the face with a folded paper. There was no appearance of defendant, who was represented by Mr. C. F. Atmore, who pieaded guilty on his behalf. Prosecuting, COnstable W. A. Calwell stated that the incident was the result of what could be termed a family quarrel. The assault was a teclrnical one, but of a type that might lead to trouble. on the streets. Mr. Atmore, 1 for defendant, admitted the accuracy of Constable Calwell's evidence, stating that there- was no intention by defendant to hurt, and asked that the matter be treated lightly. Cootes was fined 10s, with costs amounting to 10s.
