Shannon School Matters

The usual monthly meeting of tlie Shannon School Cornmittee was held In the school oii Monday evenIng. Mr. A. E. Jeffrey presided over Messrs. L. J. Bowler (secretary) , S. Free, E. H. Barber, F. J. Lucinsky, F. E. Bradey, R. E. Vinsen and Mrs. C. Stern. The headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, was also present. The visiting committeemen for the month, Messrs. Barber and Vinsen, sug&ested- that the hedge' on the east side of the pathway down to the swimming baths be removed, as it was hot considered necessary. Its removal would also improve' the appearance of the grounds. It was decided that a donation of £1 ls be made to the Horowhenua Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club. It was. moVed that a letter of appreciation be sent to MrsvE. L. Hyde for the free screening of the Royal wedding film which was giyen to the school children. The film was much appreciated by the Children and the staff. In his report for the month of June, ihe headmaster, Mr. Burtt, state'd that the roll at the end of the month stood at. 141 boys ahd 136 girls. "The- attendance during the month was somewhat affected by the prevalent influenza, and the average attendance was 123 boysand 121 girls. During the month | 10 pupils were admitted and 11 1 withdrawn. The district nurse, Sister Macdonald, has completed her medical inspection dhd the routine inspection for infectious diseases. "During the month the school was visite'd by Mr. J. Phillips, foreman of works for the Education Board, who authorised an overhaul of the septic tank system. This has since been carried out. The Education Board has suggested that the resealing of the asphalt playing area be held over until the summer months, when the grass will be available tc the children, thus leaving the asphant area free for the necessary work to be' carried out. A further supply. of reconditioned desks has come to .hand and only ttwo rooms remain to be refurnished. "The superintendent of physical education, Mr. D. R. Wills, and the chief organiser of that department for Wellington, Mr. D. O'Connor, yisited the school for purposes of inspection. A specialist in physical education, Mr. Hillary, has begun regular visits to the school as 'instruetor. "As the result of the generosity of committeemen it has been possible to"1 commence the supply of cocoa to those children who desire it for lunch. The donation by parents of sugar or sugar coupons gave the opportunity to make the drink more palatable • than the ration would allow, and as a result approximately 80 children take cocoa with their lunch. As the supply of school milk has not yet recommenced, it will be necessary to get the milk requirements for the cocoa from those committeemen who have volunteered to give it. "The June meeting of the Parents-Teachers' Association was fortunate in seeing sound films shown by Mr. W. Gibbons. The next meeting will be the annual meeting, and it will be held .on Monday, July"12, when officers for the ensuing year will be elected. The 'guest speaker for the meetmg will be Miss Steven. education officer for Dental Health, who will give an address and show films."
