Importation of Carpets
WELLINGTON, July 6. ' ' Actually licences issued up to the pres'ent for this year, amoiuit to approximately three Aimes the ligure quoted by the federation," said the Minister of Customs, Mr.* Nash, in a statement issued tonight in reply to a report from the New Zealand Retailers' Federation, to the effeet that under 1948 licences, merchants would be in a position to import only one-third of the quantity of carpets which were imported in 1938 from the United Kingdom. "Our total imports of carpets amount-. ed to £490,513 in 1938, £659, gOG in 1946 and £1,842,072 in-/1947," added the Minister.
