Truman's Chances Of Being Nominated Wane

Received Tuesdav, 7 p.m. WASHINGTON, July 5. A Tiiounting wave of anti-Truman or pro-Eisenhower feeling, has become ap])ai-ent in Demoeratic Party ranks as the ilate for the Party 's national convention draws nearer. Reports from Demoeratic Party meetings in many areas, show that the Eisenhower boom is gaining force as delegate after delegate promises to support General Eisenhower or, if General Eisenhower refused nomination, any eandidate except President Trunian. The violent opposition to President Trunian began nionths ago when southern States, enraged at President Truman's ciyil rights progrannne, swore they would not vote for him at the Phihulelphia convention beginning on July 12. Opposition to President Trunian in the north comes mainly from Democrats who fear he lvould be no match for llr. Dewey and that his defeat in the November election would drag down many Demoeratic candidates for the Senate and House. Hundreds of thousands of jobs and public offices. would be taken from the Democrats should the Republi -ans win and the big political bosses of Chicago, New .Jersey arnl New York City, realise that their political machines. would be thrown out of power in the general debacle of a Demoeratic defeat. The whole Demoeratic nomination seems to hinge on one big - "if" — if General Eisenhower wants nomination he is virtually assured of getting it. President Truman himseif, however, seems sublimely conlident and one of his ehief assist.ants said today that he was unshaken by New Jersey 's switch to General Eisenhower. and is conlident of winning nomination in the ■ first ballot. ile will need 61S of the 1234 votes tc win noniination. There will be 1592 delegnles at the convention but some. will have only half 'a vote.
