Thrilling Steeplechase Finish At Trentham In what must have been one of the best finishes in the history, of the Wellington Steeplechase, Brookby Song, wiimef of the Great Northern Steeplechase, hung on gamely to beat Master Meruit hy just over a head. He carried -L2 stone and there vyas great ' enthusiasni.when liis nuinber was hoisted on the semaphofe. Half a furlong from the post Albino was out in front and he was being proclaimed a winner when Brookby Song and Master Meruit. commenced their grand final runs. Brookby Song had a neck advanr ta'ge as they closed upon Albino and although Master Meruit got a shade nearer to him he was still over a head' short of the Northerner at the post. ' . .
Tlie Wellington. Steeplechase A great /leld of seventeeu paraded for the steeplechase, and after tliey liad gone about three-quarters of a mile Peria Prinee was out in front with Master Play and Dinlcum Pal, and they were jumping brilliantly with plenty of pace on. As they passed the stands for the lirst tinie the order was PeriaPrinee, Master Play, Dinkum Pal. Albino, Master Meruit, Hunting Dink, liatal, Whiphand,' Arabian Night, Lenornian and High Morale. The field was well strung out as they rau to the sod wall where Master Play eame to grief. Peria Prinee was siill elear of tlie field as he juiuped the stand double for tlie seeond mue, and a mile from liome he was goiiig well enough to suggest he niiglit take eatehing. liowever, ne erashed at the sod wall and Brookby .Song, Diukum Pal, Albino, Mastei Meruit, Arabian Night and Hunting Dink, wliicli were all in the pieture, • began to mick 011 ihe pace. Kunning to the last fenee Albino was in eharge from Brookby Wong and he was goiiig like a winner. Then Master Meruit tackled BrooKuy Song, with J. Giiapliu and A. Midwood nding brilliantly, and they l'ougiit it out, Brookby Song winn i n g ailer the puinshing Jinisli. Albino was just over a length away third and he wa.-, viear of Araoian Night followed by minUiig Du'iK and Batal. The field was away to a guod start and Allisloper, after falliug at the iirst fenee, skidded for over a eliain. Glenfayle, one oi the favourites, eame to grief at the seeond fenee, and Ballinai.moy led past the stands followed by Luuaria, Aga Kay, Tatara Lad, Upen t ast, WhirJwind Star and Vernon. The iield was well spread out and as far as Night Pigiiter was eoneerned ihe issue was never in doubt. Ganges Jhiished too well for Koman Duke and lie was an easy seeond. Bonifort was fourth followed by Luryalus, Triug and Cramond Buy. General Victory Finished Solidly General Y'ietory was in front a fur- , long trom home in tlie Stewards' JLlandieap and, hard ridden, he linislied witli great courage to win by a length froiii ihe fast-liiiisliing- JDeprive, and Super l-tigiit was tmrd oniy half a length lurtlier baek. Oban, Theocritus, Koya: iLeir, JJe()rive, General Victory and Puli of t uji all began w ell, and Oban anu General Vietory led 011 to the course proper where General Victory drew aliead. It was over the last half-fui iong tliat Ueprive and Super Pligh, lssued their challenges. Oban was i. eiose fourth and ne.xt were Cot-case am. Master Baron. Skywriter Just Beat Boolamskee There were ten starters in the Trentham Ilurdles and tlie winner was Skywriter, wliieli just got up to beat Boolamskee-. They were tkree lengths m front of Foxchase which just beat Towu Jicho. Moutoa Lord was the favourite but he eame to grief at the lirst hurdle. With a mile still to go Town Echo was in front from \ ictory Song, Foxchase, Bay Kobe, Skywriter and Boolamskee. It was as they ra'n to the last fenee that Boolamskee rau to the front. Over thq last half-fuiiong, however, he was hard ridden to nieet tlie brilliant challenge from Skywriter, which got up to beat him by half a head. Victory Song was iifth.
Cowper 'Was Brilliant Cowper's win in the Whyte Handicap was decisive and liis, finishing run w^s brilliant. Wild Note, . Laiigspiel. Julius Caesar, Playtos, Wonder Boy. Howe and High Order were all prominent early and Howe and Mereian Lad were handy to ,the leaders as the field, turned into the straight. Playtos was in eharge a furlong from home but he eouid not foot i,t with Cowper and Broie over the iast bit'and Broie, a lehg;th away from Cowper, was five lengths in trunt of Playtos at the finish. Playtos stuck on gamely l'or third a 'neck in front of Hormuz, which got up to beat Howe for fourth. Mereian Lad was a close fifth. Decisive. Win. for Mangatiti «■ , Mangatiti .was .backed down ■ to favouritism in .the Te Aro -Handicap, and after being with Newel Post, Lochwinnoeh, Bulaselle, Shenandoah, Colorado Maid and Wee Mae to the straight he drew right away to win by half a dozen lengths. Corineus, which ntade up a lot of ground to beat Shenandoah by a length, was third. Colorado Maid was fourth followed by Indian Song, Wee Mac and Gay Fellow. Rain and Hpavy Track Rain set iii duriyg Fridgy night at Trentham and it continued until well on in the day. The stewqrds met early lo cons'ider the position and it was decided that the meeting- would be held., When the racing was commenced the going was very lieavy and it was cutting out.
