Who Compiled Report On East Coast Maoris ? INVERCARGILL, July 2. When interviewed today on tlie suliject of the statement bv Rev. Blackwood Moore on the East Coast Alaoris, Mr. J. S. II. Robertson, Doniinion president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, made the following statemeiit: — "l\Lr. Moore is correct in stating that a report was eompiled by a sub-coni-mittee of the Waiapu branch of the N.Z.E.I. and issued by the executive of that branch in 1941. It was issued without the sauction of the Doniinion executive of the N.Z.E.I, which rau accept no more responsibility for tlie report than that the Waiapu brancli was" one of its affiliated branches. "On discovering that -the report contained statements which it believed to bc exaggerated and in some cascs whollv inaccurale, and on discovering further that the report had given otfence to East Coast members ot the Maori raee, tlie Doniinion executive of the Institute inimediatelv and volunturilv, and after discussion with and receiving the couscnt of the Waiapu branch, tendered its sincerest apologies to the IMaoris concerned and instructed the branch to withdraw tlie report. " . , . " It further instructed all its own branches that in future no branch was to issue any report over the name ot the Institute without such report having first been appro'ved by the Domiuion executive of the Institute. The Maori people generously accepted tJve assurance of the Doniinion executive that the Institute aS a wholo was not responsible for the report and that it did not agree with parts of it under c'onsideration. "That was seven years ago," concluded Mr. Robertson, "and vve be lieved the incident was'cdosed. I de plore the a, tion of Mr. Moore in fe surrecting this discredited and long buried report and apparently basing cliarges on it, and I sineerely trust this statement will result in the report being now reinterred for all time." CHASE COLDS AWAY Colds often start in the head, then settle on the chest. "Baxter's Lung Preserver keeps on the track of a cold and. with commonsense precautions will soon drive lt away.
