Reuter 's Slianghax correspondent sgys 300,000 Nationalists and (lommunist troops are locked in battle on the Honan plain southeast of Kaifeng. 1 The Communists are employing nine armies with further f'orees massed some distance wmst and east of the flghting zone awqiting further oi'ders. Lieut.Qeneral Teng AVen-Yi, Government "military Bpo-kesman, said the battle was taking the fdrm of positional warfare on a scale hitherto unprecedented in China's civil war. Dispatches state that no clear picture of the actual fighting has been obtainable tlxus far. Tfle battle deyeloped as a result of the Government olfensive cjesigned to clear the Reds from south of the Yangtse River.
