Shannon Borough Council's Meeting

The fortnightly meeting ; of the Shannon Borough Council was heict on Tuesday evening, "when the Mayor ("Mr. D. A. Fitzgeral'd) presided over Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, L. G. Say.er and H.Aitchison, The correspondence included a letter from the secretary of the Shannon Ratepayers' Association asking for the council's views on the planting of trees in Ballance Street. The trees . would- have a memorial value to those who lost their lives in the second World War. The letter stated that the association was generally in favour of the project. After the matter had been discussed, it was resolved to advise the association that the council was in favour of tne suggestions made. Messrs. Blenkhorn . and Todd made application for approval of the sub-division of lots 117 and 118 Graham Street from E. L. Hyde to P. Judd. On the motion of Cr. Bateman it was agreed that this be given and the borough seal be affixed to the transfer. Mrs. O. King and family thahked the. Mayor and councillors for the kind expression of sympathy during their recent sad bereavement. The secretary of the Shannon Football Club, Mr. H. Curran, made application for permission to take a collection at the gate for the benefit of the Unitea Nations Appeal at a football match to oe played on the local domain on July 11. Permission was granted. The town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, read notification from the -Municipal Association that a discussion had taken place with representatives of the Standards Instituie, when a request was made that the institute should undertake the preparation and printing of a standard set of model local body by-laws covering such matters as streets, footpaths, good rule and government, billiard rooms, hawkers and pedlers, traders, etc. It was anticipated that 'the Standards Council itself would give enthusiastic. support and the association secretary had already asked the Minister of Internal Affairs to represent the matter f avourably to the Minister of Industries and Commerce for his sanction. From a circular which had been dispatched by the Te Kuiti Borough Council it was appar - ent that 56 boroughs, at least, were definitely interested in the preparation of a stan'dard set of by-laws. ' Cr. Clayton, chairman of the domain committee, advised that the domain boundary hedge required trimming. It was resolved (that ten'ders be called for the work. Cr. Bateman, chairman of the building committee, reported that building applications had been received for a dwelling to the value of £1000 from Mr. K. Clough and from Mr. E. J. Spencer for the erection of a shed. Both applications were approve'd. The secretary of the Shannon Ratepayers' Association asked for a ,scale of fees and permit requirements to carry out repairs to dweldings, shops, etc. The letter stated that at a recent meeting of the association there were several conflicting views on the matter. The chairman of the building committee explained the by-laws and the town clerk was instructed to forward the information to the association. It was arranged that members of the library committee visit Otaki and inspect the free library service operating in that borough. Cr. Sayer, chairman of the works committee, reported that an engineer from the Public Works Department had inspected the proposed water supply improvements in the Clapham and Ballance Streets area, and that later further. word would be received from the Loans Board with regard t'o the loans proposals. Cr. Sayer was authorised to attend to improved 'drainage at the Stancell Street area. Cr. Sayer also reported that he had arranged with Mr. J. Raper to assist in the required drainage work at the Vance and Vogel Streets intersection, and also that the Horowhenua Codnty Council's grader had done good work -on the borough streets and that he would attend to repairs which were required to the extension bridge across Stancell's Drain to Graham Street. On the motion of Cr. Cronquest, accounts amounting to £92 16s 8d, which included wages £41 7s 2d, were passed for payment.
