BROOKBY SONG SHOULD WIN BIG STEEPLES
L.M.M.)
Boolamskee and Trafaigar Day In Other Trentham Events
(SPECIAL— FROM
' WELLINGTON, July 2. Although the weather forecast is • not promising the weather here at present is beautifully fine with warm sun, and as a result of such good weather in the past two days the track at Trentham has made a rerparkable recovery from a waterlogged condition last Monday. If present conditions continue a fine day should prevail tomorrow for the opening at Trentham of the Wellington winter meeting. Although several horses also h^iye engagements at Hastings and some are not expected to compete at Trentham the club has drawn record fields in practically every event, which will not be too helpful to patrons selecting the rightr-ones. The only other meeting being held is the concluding day of the Hawke's Bay fixture at Hastings.. Favourites for the three Trentham main events are: Wel-/ lington Steeples, Brookby Song; Trentham Hurdles, Boolam-' skee; Whyte Handicap, Trafaigar Day. -
The Mariri Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase will give the improving northerner, Ballinabuoy, an opportunity to show Trentham patrons the splendi'd improvement he has made since the Great Northem meeting. He is. a good hack who should collect some money at the meeting. Though hc fell when going well in the steeples at Hastings last Saturday, Vernon should
not" be dismisseh for that mishap. Whiriwind Star is improving and might be one of the hardest to beat. A large fierd of hacks will parade for the Woburn Handicap in which there is plenty of scope. for a surprise. Clare's Pal has b'e.en working' well at Trentham as also has Blank Cheque. Sunshine Bay, greatiy improved since 'being put to hurdling, Extra Flighc, a smart sprinter, Noble Knight, Lochrea, Lord Bradbury and The Rip are all prospects. Some of the horses engage'd in the Vittoria' Hack Hurdles are also aceeptors for Hastings. Of the large field best form is represented by Result, Rockanui, Master' Raymond, Iricisidh, and Ganges. On track work General Victory lopks like •.bging the favourite for the - r ;*S!tewardsv C. -Handicap. He 5$: ih; V.thd; pihk of condition. pull "'Of Fun is also in tip top order an-d ' is not without good prospects, the same also dpplying to Cot-case, if ^tarted here instead of Hastings, Deprive, fheocritus, Garry, Black Beret and Super Flight. Super Flight looks well and might be a good lightweight to foliow. By his good third at Hastings last week Black Beret may be seen to advantage. Brookby Song's win in the G.N. Steeplechase with the same weight as he is to carry tomorrow in the Wellington Steeplechase pointed to the Hunting Song gelding holding
a mortgage on the Wellington event, but now that Master Meruit has regained his best form with a brilliant win in the Hawke's Bay Steeples last week, if seems that ^Brookby Song will not have ^matters all his own way. MasIter Meruit suffered a setback after finishing second to Good Armour in the Waikato Steeples in May, but made a wonderful recovery at Hastings in heavy gding by running away with the Hawke's Bay Steeples. He looks to be at his best in his second attempt to win a | Wellington Steeplechase., Albino has come into 'discussion, because of his easby win in the Manawatu Steeples when having only his second start in 12 months. When at his easy win in the Manawatu class, but he may not be .so well seasoned as some of the others he
will meet tomorrow. Versatile Lisheen, a good w'inner on the flat over hurdles and country, is looked upon as the "fin'd" of the South Island. Southerners at Trentham yesterday stated that Lisheen was a good one and they would not be /surprised to see this Hazlett.fepresentative give the top weights ' a hard tussle to hold him in check. Good form is well distributed in the Trentham Hurdles with such good performers as ■ Boolamskee, Moutoa Lord, Desert Trek, Town Echo, Foxchase, Turf Topic, Morocco, Victory Song and Skywriter engaged. The topweight. Boolamskee is coming into strong favour. He certainly looks the part and is expected to give a good account of himself. Moutoa Lord is another with a strong f ollowing. The brackete'd pair, Morocco and Skywriter, are the best of the lower weighted division
although Victory Song is being freely taiked of here. One of the largest fields will para'de for the Whyte Handicap, # pride of pla,ce being held by that good horse Howe. The Defoehorse looks greatiy benefited by his spell and has been trainmg in great style. Capabie over all distances, and a prove'd weight-carrier he can be expected to- give a good "account pf himself tomorrow — m facf he is likely to wind up one of the favourites. A string of successes this winter has elevated Trafaigar. Day to the favourite division, in spi'te of the fact that he has drawn a bati
marble. He won his first open race at Awapuni on June 12, coverlng seven furlongs in such solid style that the . extra f urlong is unlikely to trouble him. Successful over a mile at Trentham in January, Wild Note just held on to win over seven furlongs at Awapuni re.cently .under 9.13. . The son of Wild Chase should be all the better for tli.e race aird with only 2 lbs. more on the scaie of weights 'he may be one of the hardest to beat. Twelve months ago Special Flight scored one of the easiest win.s on the flat at Wellington and as she showed useful form at-the -recent- -Dunedin meeting thel Sahnagundi mare must be given ai good chance under her light weight. 1 On what has been seen of hiin on J the flat Corineus should have j further prospects in the role.'While: the opposition in the Te Aro Handicap contains a number of hacKS of exceptional promise he has the speed to get a good ' positiofi early ; and there is little doubt that he j will be running 'on rfiuch better j than most • at the ' fiiiish. His ■ strongest opposition i-s expected to come from Lochwinnoch, Mangatiti, Shenandoah, Volomai and Minlon. WELLINGTON SCRATCHINGS WELLINGTON. July \.
