Easing In Fruit Supplies Increases Values
Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the iast week the easing off in supplies of fruit has resulted in a slight increase in values. Heavy consignments of overseas oranges has resulted in a retarding of saies of grapefruit and Meyer lemons. There is a very keen inquiry for choice lines of Chinese gooseberries. In the vegetable section all- liries are in keen demand, and ceiling prices are being readily obtained. There is a very good inquiry for choice cauliflower, brussels sprouts, spmach and celery, while green peas have realised up to Is 3d per lb. Spring bulbs have been coming to hand more freeiy, and meeting with very keen inquiry. Lighter yardings of poultry have been offered and heavy birds are in demand. Quotations for laxt week's saies are as follows: — Vegetables: Artichokes, 8s to 14s; kumeras, 6s to 8s per bag; beetroot, 10s to 14s; celery, 20s to 30s; leeks, 30s to 34s; turnips, 25s; spinach, 25s to 37s; rhubarb, 15s to 25s; choice lettuce, 20s to 28s; others, 10s to 18s per case; marrows, 5s to 7s per case; hot-house beans, 4s; peas, ls to ls 3d per lb.; carrots, Ohakune, ceiling price; others, 16s to 18s; cauliflowers, 18S to 30s; pumpkins, 6s to 10s per potatoes, parsnips, onions, ceiling sack; eabbage, swedes, siiver-beet, .prices. • Fruit: Choice tree tomatoes, 8s to 10s 6d; others, 6s to 7s; Meyer lemons, 6s to 8s; tomatoes, 35s to '50s; chokos, 2s to 3s per half case; New Zealand .grapefruit, 10s to 15s per bushel; guavas, ls to ls 6d per lb.; Chinese gooseberries, good demand. Fiowers: Tangerine poppies, 3s to 10s 6d; art poppies, 9s 6d to 19s; Sol D'Ors, 20s to 25s; paper whites, 5s 6d' to 9s; jonquils, 12s to 18s; freezias, ls 6d to 2s 3d; violets, 5s 6d to 20s; carnations, 4s to 12s per dozen, according to quality; good chrysanthemums, 2s to 3s per bunch; erica and all good quality shrubs in excellent demand.
