Service To Girls' Marching Recognised
in appreciation .of the valuable service rendered to , marching in the Horowhenua by Mrs. C. Nichbl, who reeently retired aS ehairwoman of the iadies' cornmittee, the executive and members bf the Horowhenua Marching- AssociatiOn tendered her a sociai evening in the Druids' Hall, Levin, on Wednesday nigbr|.i- . - During the' evening some taN ented members- entertaine'd with items, and dancing was conducted till midnight under the C'apable supervision of the M.C., Mr. A. L. Dobson. A tasty .supper was provided by the Iadies. "It has been said that the cbnsciousness of a duty well done is the greatest reward," said- the president, Mr. W. R. Jack, when jspeaking of Mrs. Nichol's work for Ithe association. "That may be so, 'but services rendered with no acknowledgment except ,a formal or perfunctory word may become irksome and a matter of habit. This, however, is" not the case with our gue t this' evening. Mrs. Nichol, as |most of ypu know, has been .chairwoman of - our ladies' cornmittee since its inception. During that time she has carried out the duties of that important offlce faithfully and well. Her kind and genlal manner towards all, her courtesy and tact, her unfailing attention to detail and ready devotion of time and energy have been actua'ted solely by a desire to advance the best interqsts of the association. These qualities have earned her the admi'ration and respect, indeed the esteem and affection, of all with whom she came in contact." On behalf of the executive and members of the association, Mr, Jack then preSented Mrs. Nichol" with a handbag ahd gloves on behalf of the executive ahd local and visiting teams. Replying, Mrs. Nichol paid a tribute to the executlve> her cornmittee and members of the asso4 ciation, stating that . she had always received from "them courtesy and co-operation, for which she was most grateful. in cohOlUsiori-, She thanked the association for its kiridly gesture. A large number of letters of appreciation of Mrs. Nichol's services were received from the associatioh's teams iri the district and the foil'owirig outsjde clubs: Lustre-, Wellington; Fashions, Dannevirke; Railways, Wellington; CaiT's and Rebel's; Petone; Rex and Chapman's, Woodville; and D.I.C., Wanganui. All these teams and« district teams were included in an illustrated address of appreciation which was also presenfed to Mrs-. Nichol. " A member of the executive, Mr. J. R. Macfarlane, also added a trlbute to the Work of Mrs. Nichol. He was followed by the Mayor af Levin, Mr. H. B.^Burdekin, who together with Mrs.'Burdekin, were the guests of the association for the evening. ^ v He was very proUd to assOCiate himseif with the tributes paid to Mrs. Nichol, said Mr. BurddkiiT. He Was qiiite suiv6° that all thc ptaise that had been given Mrs.. Nichol that evening was well desefved. When the association brought teams to Levin it was necessary to arrahge hospitality^ rihd in this aiorie Mrs. NiChoi had dorie a great deai. During the evening Mr., Burde-' "kin also presented to Miss Avis Wilton a miniature silver shield as
a personal* souvenir o'f her achievement last ybaiV in beirig adjudgec the best emergency. The shielc was dOnated by Mr. H. F.
