Trampers Use New Method Of Track Clearing
Last weekend members of the Levin- Waiopehu Tramping Club employed a new method of track making through devastated fallen ' -bush on the Waiopehu Ridge. It will be recalled" that the disastrous hurricane of February, 1936, in addition to demolishing the Waiopehu Hut, wrecked prac- . tically all the bush on the Waiopehu Ridge between Palmer's Camp and the hut kite, a distande of ■ approximately three and a half miles. This left the club with the major task of re-opening kthe track and re-building the hut, but to carrv out .this work in a reas- 1 onable time it was found necessary to deviate the track around many large windfalls, , which added greatly to its length. . Having recently: achieved this undertaking, club members are now concentrating ' on shortening * the track by making short .cuts, uprooting stumps and removing logs which lie aeross the route. This is made possible with the use of wire strainers, and good progress was made, several logs being hauled clear of the track. When this work is completed, it will considerably shorten the time and distance to the hut and also add to the pleasure of its users. -
