Last British Troops Leave Palestine
Reeeived Wednesday, i 1 p.m. LONDON, June 30. Covered by the guns of Jhe eruiser Phoebe, the British Army 's final evacuation of Palestine began at Haifa a few. ,m'i"nu'tes after midnight. General MacMillan 's spokesman ealled it "a tactic^l withdrawal," adding: "We donT expect any interference but if it comea we are ready for it. ** A message from Haifa says General MacMillan refused to attend a farewell mnnieipal banquet when the thef t of two British Churchill tanks from Haifa airport wa$ discovered. He blamed Jews for the theft. The British Consul-General at Haifa reported the theft to the United Nations' obseryer headquarfers, and claimed that it constituted a Jewish breach of the truce. While demolition squads blew up the last immovable stores before the Army quits Palestine, R.A.F, planes searched the roads for the missing tanks. A third . tank which was stolen from the heavily-guarded Haifa airport was found stranded a mile away ^.fter a breakdown. A British offieer said two* Dragoon guards disappeared simiultaneougly with th.e tanks and might have deserted, taking thetanks with them.
