Crossing Accidents Wellington was the worst city in New Zealand for accidents . on pedestrian crossings, said the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. Laurenson, when addressing the New Zealand Road Safety Councii. Mr. Laurenson said there were 40 accidents in which pedestrians ..were injure'd at crossings, last year. Eight occurred in Auckland, 15 in , Wellington, two in Christchurch and three in Dunedin.' Meeting of CORSO The Levin Provlncial Committee of CORSO held its monthly meeting recently. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Burdekin, th,e phair was occupied by the vice-president, Mrs. Lester. The report showed that 706 garments, one carton of old. linen, 169 pairs of shoes, 121 packets of seeds and 60 pairs of spectacles had been packetl and lorwarded to headquarters in Wellington. Church at Waiheke Waiheke Island ls expected to have its Arst church shortiy, the Waiheke Island Interdenominational Church having been grante'd permission to erect a hall at Oneroa. With- volunteer labour, it is hoped to erect the building in a l:ew days. At present Sunday school gatherings are held in the school. Each Sunday the Minister in charge, the Rev. F. L. Gardner, conducts services in homes at Oneroa, Surfdale and Ostend. Defence Menace "Although the Auckland Islands are called sub-Antarctic they are much nearer to the equator than is the south of England," said Mr. H. F. Baird, director of the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, at a meeting of the Canterbury chapter of the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries. Carnley harbour, he said, was one of the-largest harbours in the South PaciAc, and was considered a big risk to the defence of New Zealand. The same applied to Perseverance harbour he added. Interference With Telephones Wilful interference with the operation of a telepnone without the authority of the PostmasterGeneral, is made an offence by the Post and Telegraph Amendment Bill introduced and read the firfet time in the House of Representatives yesterday. It is also made an offence -to move -a telephone without authority from the position in which it is installed, or to connect any additional apparatus to it. A person who commits these offences is liable to a fine of up to £100 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year. The Post-master-General, Mr. Hackett, said the Bill consolidated previouE amendments and made one or twc others that had been found necessary. Wrestler's Interest in Crops Though he is a' wrestler by profession, Joe Pazandak, who is in New Zealand, holds the degree oi Bachelor of Science at the University of Minnesota and specialises in agronomy. During his New Zealand tour he is' taking everj opportunity of studylng crop production and is visiting the three agricultural colleges, Ruakura, Lincoln and Massey. Hls family is in business in seed dressing in North Dakota and he has an uncle 'with a 1000-acre farm of which 700 acres are under cultivation. Rotation oi crops in four paddocks was sc arranged that while one paddock was growing corn, a second had wheat, the third oats, and the fourth was in sod- or legumes.
