Eire Seeks Better Grasslands

LONDON, June 21. Eire (fovernment ofticials engaged in trade talks with the British Govcrnment, have stated that. with the permission of the New Zealand Government, Mr. George Holmes, New Zealand agricultural liaison officer in London, has been engaged to report oii Eire's grasslands and advise on the best tvpes of grass. Much of Eire's farming is reverting to pasture following the compulsory growing of grain erops during the wai'. .She is planniug to build up a big trade with Britain with the export of iive cattle and to this end and to increasel output of her dairy herds, she is seeking to improve her grasslands. Eire is not an exporter of butter to Britain and it is not expected she is likely to be for some time. She has. in fact. a shortage of butter and is rationed to six ounces per person. The Eire Goverument pays its farmers a total subsidy of £3.000, 000 to produce butter for home cousumption. Oue outcome of Eire improving her grasslands is that she may become a buyer of New Zealand grass seed.
