U.N, Appoal Still Rising With a large proportion of Auckland's donations y.et to be recorded, the United Nations AppeaF'for Children , has realised £275, a83, according to .inforipation given yesterday by the- dPpeal organiser, Mr. R. Malcolm. It is expeoted that Auckland's total. eontribution will be at least- £50,000. Jersey Herd Record A New Zealand record fo? a Jersey herd was made at the dispersal sale of the Ashgr'dVe Jersey stud .at Mareretu, North Auckland, when an average ' of 110- guineas was secured for the 31 cows. The herd was the property of Mr. Allan Worthington. Seventeen daaghters of Almadale Carbine averaged 141 -gu-iheas, -with five .makipg over 200 guineas. Model Penicillin Flant A scale model' of a penicillin production plant deVised by the chemi-r cal engineers of the Dominion Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research is at present on view at the WeUington Central Library. The plant was produced for the Department's Plant ' Chemistry Laboratory in Palmerston North, where it will be used to produce antibiotics for experimental purposes. Paying Inconle Tax Pay-as-you-go income tax is recommended by the New Zealand Pederation of Lafoour. A remit to the annual conference, recommending this form of taxation, was endorsed by the national executive, which considered remits that could not ibe brought before the conference deiegates. The conference also endorsed a committee report recommerfding that the Federation shoald pfess for an increase in personal exemption for income tax purposes to a sum not less than the stand'ard mininaum wage rate for unskilled workers. Excessive Wool Branding Excessive branding was responsible for an estimated loss of £50,000 on New Zealand's annual wool clip, said Mr. A. Briscoe Moore at a meeting of the meat and wool section council o*f Federated Farmers. A system of head branding should be eyolved, he said. Although by law brands had to scour out,. the problem of excessive raddling" was not" remedied. A recent case in the North Island was cited as indicating the seriousness o| the position.
