Higher Powered X-Rays From Atomic Energy

Received Wednesdav, 7 p.m. LONDON, June 16. British scientists >at the Ministry of Supply Atomic Research establrshmeut have built a synchrotron (electron accelerating machine) which produces thirty million-volt X-rays which are so penetrating that it should be possible to treat malignant tumours deep within the human ^body which hitherto have been inaecessible to external ladiation. Machines are being constrqcted to enable the Medical Research Couneil to experiment with these penetrating rays, but it will be some time before the rays' medical potentialities are fully investigated. The synchrotron will also be used as the model for the design of very high energy machines. The new synchrotron aceelerates nuclearparticles so rapidly that their mass increases sixtyfold. The thirty million volts of such aecelerated electrons can produce a spark 50 yards long, ^but nowhere in the apparatus is an accelerating voltage used greater than" that of a normal wireless battery.
