GISBORNE, June 15. The opinion that the Gisborne' flood was one of the greatest fn New Zealand's history was .expr.esised by Mr. I. J. 'Pohl'en, of ^be Soil Survey Division of the Scient'ific! and Industrial Research Department. * He estimated that 2500 acpes below Te Karaka had been silted to a deptli which wiped out the grass, and some 1200 to 1500 aeres above Te Karaka were in the same condition. Taking the average depth of silt at one f-oot — prob§tbly an under-estimate— it was' obvious that 8,000,000 tons of silt had been deposited over 4000 acres. Silting was much heavier tliau in the recent Hawke's Bay floods. He thqught the district was lucky that. the silting did pot contain a heavy' sand deposit. ■
