Received Monday, 10.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, June 14. Melbourne spent the King's Birthday holiday in the worst fog for years. 4A midday visibility was only 50 feet. It cleared slightly in the early afternoon but began to de§cend again about 5 o'clock. No aircraft arrived or departed at the Essendon aerodrqme, shipping services were disrupted and trains proceeded with the utmost caution. Several ships due to berth today had to remain at their bay anchorages with fogbells ringing. When the first race was run at ilemrngton the horses were out of sight along the back of the cpurse and only came into view about three furlongs from home. Conditions were a little better for tbe later races but yisibility was again bad fqr the last event. The first event was a hurdfe race wherein there were several falls about which the spectators did not know until the riderless horses came into view. Melbourpe usually experiences a series of fogs at this time of the year, but today was the first occasion foy many years whereon the fog has not lifted all day. With a maximum temperature of 44.6 degrees at 3 p.m. it was also the coidest day for 14 years.
