Received Monday, 9 p.m. LONDON, June 13. Many people outside the Lahour Party are incensed at Mr. Dalton 's return to .Gatainet rank at £5000 a year in a job that previously was worth only £3000. They referred to it as "Danegeld" and "Dalton--geld," implying that he had been taken bhck into the J^linisterial fold to cairn his Leftish ahihitions. There has also been mnch nojijecture abont his exact role now that he is on this exalted payroll. Mr. Harold Macmillan suggested that so long as Mr. Dalton does nothing he will be cheap at the price. Another comment was that, anyway, in financia). mafters the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Crippsj wonld prove a successful checker oi' the ex-Chancelior.
