Despite the chorus of protests by promiuent Republicans against the recent House cuts in the Foreign Aid programme, the determination of the 'House leaders has not wilted. Representative yjolm Taber (Republican, X'ew York), ehairman of the House Appropriations Gomniittee, wholed tlie Ilouse move to whittle foreign aid, ha.s reaffirmed his stand and no proponent of the, cuts has "yet re- \ ersed his position. Meanwhile thc leading candidates for liepublu-an presideutial nomination, in- . eiuding Seiiators Robert Taft, Arthur \'audeiiberg and,, Goveruors Thonias Dewev and Earl Warren, have commit-l-ed- themsel'ves tp. oppose, the verdicf oi their own party ihajority in the House. Comiuander llarold Stassen, appearing- beforo the Senate Appropriations iimniittee- today*ht his own request, appealed for the immediate restoration uf the cuts. "More than .dollars, materials or recovery is involved. The iialional honour is at stake, " he said. Reuter's Washington correspondent .-uys that witlv pressure from such'im (luential political' ligures it now appears certain that' the Senate Committee some time next week will vote for the restoration of a large part if not all of the slashed funds.
