Auckland Mayor's Comment Taken Exception To
MASTERTON, June 11. Exception to comment by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, on a stat&ment hy the Minister of Works, tvir. Semple, regarding the Rimutaka deviation, was taken by several speakers at last night's meeting of the Carterton Chamber of Commerce. The meeting considered that the Rimutaka deviation was an , urgent priority work. Mr. H. Mortenson said that Mr. Allum should be told very "definitely that the people of the Wairarapa regarded the Rimutaka, tunnel as a first priority. The' Rimutaka Hill had for years zetarded progress within the district, and it was to be hoped that district local bodies would keep pressing for the work to 'be regarded as a fiixt priority. The president of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J. M. Laifig, said it was an absurdity that heavy goods trafnc should have to make the long detour from Wellington to the Wairarapa via PaN merston North. "It is a national matter rather than a district one," said Mr. A. M. Broadbent. The country was losing money through not having the deviation. "Mr- Allum has probably never been over the hill," said the secretary, Mr. G. O. Smart.
