Montgomery after his talks last year with tlie serviee chiefs ?it Singapore, Australia and Xew ZeaJand re.eomniended that Singapore slioukl again be built up as a major base for the defence of the Pacific and Sout heast Asia, says t'he newspaper Free Press. After eonsultation with Viseount .Montgomery the tioutheast Asia Defence Commit tee deeided to transfer the headipiarters of the British Paeifle Fleet from Hong Kong to Wingapore. Eventually Australian and New Zealaud aireraft, troops and ships are expected to play an aetive part in the Singapore garrison, says the newspaper.
