Chick Breeder Worried At Sawmill Activities
Claimiiig that the proposed establishment of a sawmill on an adjoining property would seriously menace his livelihood, Mr. M. A. Sanders, owner of - a chicken hatchery in' Main Road, Levin, sought the eo-operation of the Horowhenua County Council, at its meeting on Wednesday, in preventing the ereetion of the piant. Also perturbed at the prospect of having a sawmill in their Ipcality are four residents, Mesdames F. May and O. Lankshear, of Main Road, and Messrs. G. Barday and F. W. Black, of Beach Road, whose. , J names were inclu'ded in a petition from Mr. Sanders' solicitors. *
The activities of the : sawmill, which is to be operated by Messrs. Crighton and Son, would .greatly increase the mortality among tha / chickens, wrote the solicitor, and' ■ he asked if the council had an extra urban town planning scheme under which it could act, and if not whether such a scheme could be brought into being by the council for the proteetion of occupiers of property in semi-urbanised areas. A letter was also r.eceived from the firm, which state'd that it understood that objections were being' raised, and ad'ded that it would be agreeable to meet the cqmplainants and have the matter talked over. The county clerk, Mr. F. H. Hudson, said that the firm had applie'd , for a permit for the .ereetion of the mill, but he had taken no action as yet. The chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, said that the council had no extra urban planning scheme, and it was not a thing which could be put into operation in five minutes. "One wonders," he said, _ "if that area near the railway station would not be an industrial area.if there was such a scheme. It was, of course, unfortunate as far as the chicks were concerned. He undefstoo'd that the idea of putting the miil there had originated when the firm found that it could not get labour in it's present site.. It was proposing moving neafer the town so that labour could be had more easilv. He would suggest that the council send representativ.es to meet all parties in the dispute on the ground, and see if some solution could be arrived at, ' Some further -discussion _ was taken in committee, after which it was decided that Crs. D. K. Guy, E. !R. Winkler and the engineer,_ Mr. W H Fraser, discuss the position ! with Messrs. Sanders and Crighton. . .
