Quota Achieved Levin and district on Friday night achieved its minimum quota of £1000 in the United N%tions Appeal for Children. This morning there were still sorne 40 collection cards to be handed in. Tobacco Faetory Damaged A fire in the Nelson Tobacco Company's faetory caused aamage estim'ated. at £10,000. Valuabie maehinery, stocks oi manufaetured tobacco and 5000 lbs. of leaf were lost. Radio And Spaee To study the radiations from spaee which have been picked up by ultra-short wave radio during the last two years, Mr. G. J. Eleetric Typewriter An electric typewriter, designedto reduce fatigue,' increase output and take 20 instead of 12 carbon copies, is beihg tried in the General Post Office, Wellington. It works with a fliek of the keys, and produces uniformity of touch. Expert typists can accustom themselves to its use in a week, and it •has been found in Californik that their output is increa'sed by onethird. The postal authorities may buy several for use in the Dominion. First Trip Since 1941 Making her first voyage to New Zealand since 1941, the reconditioned Shaw Savill liner Mataroa is scheduled to arrive at Wellington at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. Of her 382 passengers, 125 are assisted immigrants. The Mataroa is one of several ships speeially fitted to carry assisted immigrants. Her equipment include's a mechanical ventilation and heating system which controls the temperature of the air. to suit the varying climatic conditions of the voyage to New Zealand. Sought Ry Police Three men, two of whom are armed escaped from the Porirua Mental Hospital on May 14, and are being sought by the police. Shortly after their escape from Porirua, a shop at Kaiwarra was entered and some food stolen. It is believed the men would be in possession of a red truck which was missed from Eketahuna on Friday night, when two shops were entered. From a sports depot, a .303 rifle and a .22 rifle were stolen. It is known that the men are in possession of food, and with thetruck may be heading northwards. One of the men has escaped on seyeral occasions, and usually heads towards Napier.
