After 13 years of sterling service to the community as district nurse,; Nurse I. Cooper was given a rous-; I ing farewell ceremony • by the j Maoris of Otaki and district on; : Wednesday night. '• ■ i ' | The function was heid in the Raukawa meeting house, which;. was brightly lit and there was a magnificent attendance of her friends and ex-patients. Wideiy- : known, respected and loved| throughout the district, - Nurse ! Cooper was accorded a farewell* which was a tribute to her popu- i larity. ' The main speaker of the evening was the Revi Paora Temuera, : • who spoke in glowing terms of; Nurse Cooper's readiness and wil- ; lingness to carry out her work at , all times. He told oi the good work' l done by her among the Maori i' people and the respect in which she , ■ was heid by both Maori and European. Mrs. Te Hana, on behalf ofi " the Maori women, expressed her; ; appreciation of the work Nurse : Cooper had done. j & Following the speeches, Mr. ^ Temuera made the guesl a presentation of a handsome cheque f donated by the Maori people as a , 1 token of the esteem in which she: l was heid. > • Replying, Nurse Cooper spoke on , the education of the Maori _ child1 ren, in whom she is particularly interested. She expressed her desire to see every child sent to school. She loved the- Maori people 9 and their ways, and it was for - that reason that she took such an s interest in them. e During the evening the Maoris o presented several action songs and - items, which were interspersed with dancing. Vocal solos were given by Miss B. Hakaraia and Mrs. Roiri, ; whist Messrs. R. Carkeek and H.; t Raika gave some vocal duets. , An e excellent supper brought the even-; " ing to a close.
