WANGANUI, June 4. "With a elose overhaui of the Hocial Hecurity Department and an exact medical and police check-up of a great many of the beneliciaries who are now resting upon the social security funds, the taxpavers' burden would be lightened to the tune of £25,000,000 to £80,000,000, a year, ' ' said Mr. S. J. . Buliivan in his presidential address to the executive of the Wanganui Employers ' Association when he pointed to the ne.od for a reduetion in the taxation burden and eritieised the growth of the Public Service. Mr. Sullivan said -that a large expenditure by the Go'Yernment. on' adnimistration, and' a'. Continuous demand for further stkff in tlie Public' Service gave little- J|ppe of/a- .recession .in'thxatioh. The Public Service Iiad grown too big, while industry was 20,000 employees short. That many fewer in the eivil service and transferred to industry would assist the position materially. The Social Security Department had far exceeded aiiticipations and benefits were costing the country £40,000,000 yeai'ly. It was questionable whether they could continue, Mr. Sullivan said.
