Power Boards Cannot Have Own Schemes
AUCKLAND, June The Government was fully eonscious of .the necessity of relieving the shortugc of electrical power and was als* mindful of its duty to the people oi NTew Zealand, said the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Hemple, in a letter l>) the Auckland Chamber of Coinnien-e. The chamber had previouslv writien to the Minister urging that the Government " set up a Royal Commission to investigate the electricity supply problenwin the North Island. Mr. Semple stated that 'after very full consideration of all the available facfs, the Government was of the opini'in that there was no praetical alteniative to the utmost prosecution of the works in hand. No ]-eal purpose would b' served by the appointment of a Royal Commission to investigate the supply ot. electricity in the North Island. Mr. Semple stated that the issue of licenees to power boards to develon power sehenies of their own, would not be in the national interest. The policy of vesting water power rights in the Crown was considered to be correct as it served the national interest rather than local interests. It would be unwise to allow any diversion of eifort oi inaterial at the present time.
